Māui becoming a kererū

 Māui becoming a kererū

In one tradition, the legendary trickster Māui turned himself into a kererū (New Zealand pigeon) to fly after his mother. Many Māori traditions show a close, mystical relationship between humans and nature.

Once upon a time the Kererū's feathers were white.

According to Māori legend the legendary trickster Māui wanted to find out where his mother, Taranga, went during the day. One night Māui decided to hide his mothers skirt to try and delay her. She still left so Māui transformed into a white Kererū to follow her. Still holding onto her skirt, the white Kererū's feathers started taking on the colours of the beautiful skirt of Taranga.

And that is how the Kererū got their beautiful feathers.
